Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico
Field Session Dates:
July 4 – 30, 2010
I. Faculty Travel(1)
From Albuquerque to Morelia via a University of New Mexico (UNM) eleven passenger van: July 1-3, 2010:
July 1: Albuquerque – Santa Teresa, NM border crossing - Villa Ahumada, Chi. – Chihuahua, Chihuahua. (hotel at either Villa Ahumada or Chihuahua – this depends on the departure time and the time spent obtaining proper paper work for the van and passengers at the border).
July 2: Chihuahua, Chi. – Torreon, Coa, - Zacatecas, Zac. (hotel at Zacatecas)
July 3: Zacatecas Zac. – Aguascalientes, Ags. – Irapuato, Gto, - Morelia, Mich. (hotel at field site – Morelia, Michoacán
II. Field Itinerary:
A. Sites near Morelia that will be the destination for short (2-4 hour ) weekday field trips – These will be scheduled during the four week session according to the availability of the van, faculty leaders, cultural events, etc. These destinations are within 40 miles of Morelia and can be visited on an improvisational basis: Tzintzuntzan, Capula, Lake Patzuaro, Lake Zirahuen, Santa Fe de La Laguna, Tingambato, Patzcuaro, and Ihuatzio. These destinations have either cultural , historical, or archaeological significance important in Conexiones curriculum.
B. Weekend Field trip destinations (weekend field trips are optional)
July 10, July 11 – Day trips to Patzcuaro and Lacustrine environs
July 16-18 Field trip with faculty leader(s) to Mexico City DF, Teotihuacan, etc. Alternative Field trip(2) with faculty leader(s) to Guanajuato, Gto
July 23-26 Field trip with faculty leaders in association with a research and media documentation project in Angaghuan, Michoacan under the leadership of Drs. Enrique Lamadrid and Miguel Gandert. This field trip will also include a visit to the Volcano Paricutin and documentation under the supervision of Drs. Lamadrid, Gandert and faculty of the folk music and dance traditions of the seasonal fieste of Santiago Apostal at Angaghuan, Michoacan.
Note: There is freedom in this itinerary for faculty members to organize alternative field trips. Guadalajara, for example, is an attractive field trip destination that is roughly the same distance from Morelia as Mexico City. If one of the faculty members wants to lead a student field trip to Guadalajara or another destination that harmonizes with the Conexiones curriculum, program flexibility will certainly make that possible.
III. Faculty return travel
from Morelia, Michoacan to Albuquerque, NM: July 31 – August 2: Identical to #I. above reversed.
Students travel to and from the field site independently in small travel groups that Conexiones faculty organize and orient to make the trip by air or executive class bus.
This weekend will allow students a choice between alternative field destinations, with roughly half of the students visiting each destination.
